Searches for Swinger Cruises Are Through the Roof Right Now

According to new data, interest in swinger cruises skyrocketed compared to last year.

The travel landscape is vast, and there is a niche little pocket for every demand, from the most mainstream and popular ones to the quirkiest and lesser-known options.

Yet, at times, travel's "hidden gems" catch some wind and quickly become a buzzy trend that everybody suddenly wants to try out. This year, that's the case for swinger cruises.

Swinger cruises are exactly what they sound like. In the same way many cruise lines theme voyages around hyper-specific topics, such as Hallmark Movie cruises to faith-based cruises, some cruise companies, such as Bliss Cruise, organize trips for adults looking to participate in swinging.

On swinger cruises, popular amenities include "clothing optional" areas, from pools to tanning decks, and playrooms where guests are allowed to participate in sexual activities with one another, as well as regular entertainment and programming. The whole purpose is for guests to have fun with their sexual expression within the allowed parameters while they discover the world and visit new places.

Lately, people seem to really be into the idea. A quick look at Google Trends data will show that global searches around the term "swinger cruise" have skyrocketed, increasing by 410%, which is the steepest increase in the past five years. It might all be part of a bigger trend, though. As the Washington Post reports, experts have noticed an increase in specialty sailings in recent years, and it has to do with the new ways in which people are looking to travel nowadays.

"Overall, the travel industry is getting so much more experiential in a number of ways, and theme cruises are the ultimate experiential vacation," Chris Hearing, a partner and executive director at Entertainment Cruise Productions, a major organizer of theme cruises, told the Washington Post. "You get immersed, in our case, in week-long theme cruises where from the moment you walk on the ship, you are surrounded by people that are completely into Star Trek or Comic-Con or motorcycles or '80s or '90s music."

Seeking out meaningful experience versus "passive" discovery is also changing the travel space in a broader sense. Dubbed "experience tourism," the travel trend focuses on seeking out experiences that one finds meaningful and immersive, allowing travelers to connect more deeply and personally with their travels.

According to software firm Flyware, 89% of tourism service providers have recently witnessed a higher demand for experiential travel, which speaks to the desire of people to prioritize unique leisure experiences rather than more conventional vacations.

In this light, the sudden interest increase in swinger cruises makes sense. If travelers want to focus on personal expression, connections, and unique experiences, a swinger cruise definitely checks all those boxes.
